Volunteer at Literacy Volunteers of Niagara County

Volunteers are the most important aspect of the LVNC program. With very few exceptions, all activity at LVNC is carried on by involved, dedicated volunteers.

The majority of volunteers working with LVNC are tutors. Our tutors come from many backgrounds and interests. While some of our tutors are teachers, the vast majority are not. Both men and women tutor, in a wide variety of ages. A number of our tutors are retired, but just as many are working full or part-time. Among our current group of active tutors are an artist, an engineer, several stay-at-home moms, a veterinary technician, a banker, a college professor, and a librarian.

Primary requirements for tutoring include patience, a love of reading, and good organizational skills. Experience in tutoring is not necessary, we train you in proven methods of adult learning.

Our next Tutor Training Session is set for
September 16 (Orientation), September 20 & September 27.

LVNC is governed by a volunteer board of directors. These important volunteers chart the direction LVNC takes and they see to it that the mission of the organization is fulfilled. Because we are a county-wide organization, board members come from all areas of the county and a wide variety of professions. If interested in serving on the board, please fill out and return a board application form to schedule an interview.

Volunteers are always needed, both for tutoring and for board positions. Other areas needing volunteer assistance are public relations activities, office help, and fundraising.

To learn more about volunteer opportunities at LVNC call or e mail the Executive Director at 433-7014 or locklit@aol.com.
